Start with a win.

Our first league game of the season was played against St Marychurch Old Boys at the picturesque ground at Cockington. The day was sunny with a few clouds overhead.Stoke turned up with a fairly strong team and with an Umpire and Scorer/12th Man

The toss was won by Stoke who decided to field first. The bowling being opened by David Rew and Chris Saunders. Chris struck first with only his 2nd ball, so we had SMOB’s at 3-1 after only two overs. Some fairly tight bowling kept SMOB down to under 3 an over, when in the 14th over, Chris Saunders pulled up from bowling with back trouble. Realising that he wouldn’t be able to continue Tim Treeby had to give up scoring to come on as a substtiute fielder, with Mike Lang bowling the rest of the over. At this stage SMOB were 40-1 after 14 overs. Chris Presst and Mike Lang took a wicket a piece in the next couple of overs so SMOB were 41-3 after 17 overs.

Chris Prestt then gave the returning Tom Hawkins a chance to see what he could do. Well as it happened he could do a lot. Wicket maiden his first over and in conjuction with Mike Lang at the other end caised a complete collapse of SMOB, with them going from 43-3 of 18 to 70 all out of 29 overs, and Tom finsishing with a Triple Wicket Maiden and figures of 4-4 of 6 overs.

As there was still plenty of time before the scheduled Tea Break, after a quick change around Stoke went into bat with David Rew and Paul Carpenter opening the batting. Stoke were 7-1 after 3 overs, were we going to have the same trouble as SMOB. Well it seems not as with some fine running between the wickects and the odd 4 Paul Carpenter and ATC got us to touching distance at tea (46-2 of 15 overs). After tea Paul Russell went for a duck but Paul Carpenter and Mike Lang, knocked off the remaing runs fairly quickly, with the win coming in the 22nd over.
